Ramadan: Tips for Healthy Eating During Ramadan

Ramadan Mubarak to all who celebrate!⭐️ 🌙

Ramadan is a blessed month where millions of people around the world fast for an entire month from sunrise until sunset. A time to reflect, cleanse your soul, and give back to the community and those in need.

We wish all who celebrate a very happy and blessed month!

We’ve got some very helpful tips for those observing the month of Ramadan.

Morning Meal:

During Ramadan, you can wake up right before sunrise and have a morning meal (suhoor) to ensure you have enough energy to get you through your day.  This is actually highly recommended and shouldn’t be missed.  The food choices you make for this meal are super important and will impact your energy levels through-out your day.  Here’s what we recommend:

  • Stay away from simple carbohydrates.  These carbs are broken down quickly for energy, but do not provide long lasting energy and feeling of satiety.  Simple carbs include sugar, processed sugary cereals, some granola bars (read the ingredients), and crackers.
  • Instead try to include healthy fats, proteins, and some fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Overnight oats make an excellent suhoor as this helps to keep you full for a very long period of time.  Check out our Berry Oatmeal or Cashew Dream breakfast jars.  These both make excellent suhoor choices!
  • Dates make a fantastic choice as well.  They are nutrient dense and can help provide your body with energy to get you through.  They are also very high in fibre which is very important during Ramadan especially to ensure your bowel movements don’t slow down (sorry for TMI!)  One thing we recommend is to include almonds, walnuts or another form of nut with your dates.  The healthy fats in the nuts help to reduce the rate at which the natural sugars get broken down into your body.  They also help keep you fuller for longer.

Healthy Eating During Ramadan:

  • Ensure you are hydrated! This means drinking water right after you break your fast and during your morning meal.  Give yourself enough to wake up before sunrise to ensure you can drink some water.  It’s hard to drink enough water when you can’t drink through out that day, which is why it is super important to watch out for what you are drinking when you are able to eat/drink.  Choosing foods with high water content also helps.  Some of the juices we recommend that are excellent hydrators and very nutrient dense are Glow, Mean Greens, Evergreens, Beet it Orange, Royal Flush, and Pineapple Chia.
  • Try to control your portions and what you are eating.  Traditionally this is a time for families and loved ones to gather and celebrate.  Usually this also means including very heavy meals that one may over indulge in.
  • It’s best to break your fast with water and dates as you will be less likely to overeat.
  • Vegetables/Salad/Soup: Half of your meal.  We’ve got some delicious home made soups options that you can include for your daily Iftar.  Traditional Lentil Soup, Moroccan Chickpea Soup, and a hearty Butternut Squash.
  • Carbohydrates: Quarter of your meal.
  • Protein: Quarter of your meal

Controlling Sugar Cravings:

  • Understanding that sugar is an addiction is the first step. We aren’t saying to never enjoy your favourite sweets, but we are definitely recommending to limit it.  Knowing that sugar has a vicious cycle of leaving you wanting more and more is the first step in being able to conquer your cravings.  We recommend: DATES! They are naturally sweet and like we mentioned very nutritious.  You will likely eat less of whatever sweet you are craving if you reach for dates instead.

Take the time to plan your morning and evening meals so you can be prepared and not have to resort to unhealthy options.  Remember it’s about keeping a balance and still being able to enjoy the foods you love.  Find creative ways of making unhealthy meals, healthier by substituting fried to baked.

We hope this was helpful and wish you and yours a happy and blessed Ramadan!

4. Organize virtual gift exchanges and holiday parties
5. Build a snowman (when it snows!)

COVID-19 and Protocols at Green Press

Our Dear Friends,

We hope that you are keeping safe and healthy. At Green Press, we are taking numerous measures to ensure the safety of our staff and customers. We would like to share our protocols, and invite you to ask any questions you may have.

At a high-level, we have implemented the following as of March 2020 and follow all guidelines from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. Detailed information on our practices can be found at the end of this email:

  • Juice Bottles and Returns: We follow an intensive 3-stage cleaning process for all bottles. We are currently accepting clean bottles only for returns.
  • Juicing Process and Food Safety: All staff are required to wear protective equipment while handling produce and bottles. All produce is triple washed, in accordance with optimal food safety guidelines. There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 being spread through food or food packaging.
  • Physical Distancing and Sanitation: All staff and customers are required to wear masks when in store and to stand 6-feet apart (with decals to highlight distance). We have ensured that we have hand sanitizer available and ask that customers sanitize when entering the store, and we have extra masks for anyone that has forgotten theirs. We disinfect all high-traffic areas hourly.
  • In Person Dining: We are operating under temporary reduced hours at our Oakville and Port Credit locations for pick-up and take-out only. In-store dining is not currently available. Our Toronto location remains closed for the time being.
  • Juice Sampling: We have stopped the sampling of in-store cold pressed juices. (We know you love to try these and can’t wait to re-introduce this once it is safe!)

In addition to take out at our Mississauga and Oakville locations, we also offer curbside pickup and in-store pickup. You can also order online and receive FREE delivery on most orders over $50 depending on where you live, OR find us on UberEats, DoorDash, Skip the Dishes, and Ritual.
The team at Green Press continues to take the pandemic very seriously and are taking the necessary steps and following public health guidelines to ensure the safety of our staff, patrons and community. As a family we all drink our juices daily, including our two young daughters! What we want for ourselves, we want for our customers, and would never risk your safety. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email us at
With love,

Samar & Suhail

Additional Information:

Bottle Returns & Washing Process:

We are currently accepting clean bottles only. All of our bottles, including those that are returned to us undergo an intensive 3 stage cleaning process. First, they are soaked in a water and bleach solution. Second, they are thoroughly scrubbed. Thiird, they are placed into our high temperature dishwasher that reaches approx 180 degrees F. This three step process ensures they are clean, sanitized, and safe for use. This has been our process since our inception 5 years ago, to ensure the safety of all our customers. This process, along with the research that has determined that transmission through food or food packaging is extremely low (there have been no confirmed cases linked to food), we have decided to proceed with our bottle recycling program and not put this on hold. We will always follow the latest research and science to stay informed and make the best decisions for our staff, customers and community. More information can be found here:

Juicing Process:

Our staff and juicers are required to always wear protective equipment, including gloves and masks, while maintaining physical distancing. Our juicing facility is over 3000 sq ft, and our employees maintain more than 6ft of space between each other when working. Additionally, food as not been found to be a source of transmission, and we are ensuring that our process would mitigate any risk (although extremely low) that there may be. Our produce is triple washed, and comes straight from local farms here in Ontario and from the Ontario food terminal. There is no other contact with the produce during this process. More information can be found here:

As an establishment that serves food and beverage products, store cleanliness and sanitation has always been extremely important to us. We bring in pest control regularly to ensure our stores are pest free (yes this is a real issue among food establishments!) We operate with strict cleaning measures in place and have increased our daily sanitation process further since the beginning of the pandemic to ensure the safety of our customers.

In store dining:

We are temporarily closed for dine in our Mississauga and Oakville locations. We have made the decision to keep our Oakville location closed for dine-in, although indoor dining is not restricted in Halton Region. We personally feel that the area is too small to accommodate dine-in in a physically distanced and safe manner. We want to ensure that our patrons feel welcome and safe at all times.

Although we are closed for dine-in, we are open at BOTH Mississauga and Oakville to serve you safely for take-out and pickup! All staff and customers are required to wear masks when in store, wand to stand 6-feet apart (with decals to highlight distance). Staff are also required to wash their hands regularly and wear gloves. We have ensured that we have hand sanitizer available and ask that customers sanitize when entering the store, and we have extra masks for anyone that has forgotten theirs. We disinfect all high-traffic areas hourly. We follow all of the guidelines set out by Health Canada to mitigate risk of transmission between staff, customers and the community.

In addition to take out at our Mississauga and Oakville locations, we also offer curbside pickup and in-store pickup. You can also order online and receive FREE delivery on most orders over $50 depending on where you live, OR find us on UberEats, DoorDash, Skip the Dishes, and Ritual.

What Makes us Different

What Makes us Different

We absolutely LOVE what we do!  Our company was founded because we have personally experienced how juicing and healthy eating can change how you feel from the inside out.

Here are a few things that make us different and unique:

That means that we only accept the same high-quality ingredients for our customers that we demand for our own family and children. We are hands-on owners which makes us feel more connected to our customers, many of whom have become our friends.

Customer service is one of our top priorities. We always value our customers and appreciate them.  Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are ready to assist you at our three locations and over the phone. This is more than just buying juice, it’s about the positive experience we want to create for you.  We also have a live chat agent, who is also a registered holistic nutritionist, on our website ready to answer any questions that you may have.  Nutrition, your order, health, anything really!

Remember when your mama always told you to put your heart into everything that you do? Well we love what we do so much that we pour our heart into it everyday! This is reflected in the way our juices and food taste. Our juicing press runs daily with the same team of dedicated family and friends that ensure the quality of every single bottle.

Our juices are created by a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN).  This means that the ingredients that go into each flavour are carefully selected based on the benefits it is intended to provide.

Made fresh to order.   We juice in small batches daily to ensure our customers receive freshly made juices all the time.  You can rest assure that your juices were made FRESH and haven’t been sitting on a shelf for weeks or even months!

What does this stuff mean anyways? Well the short of it…it subjects the juice to some sort of processing that kills off any potential bacteria.  In doing so it also kills off any good bacteria, enzymes and some essential vitamins and nutrients that are essential for digestion and other processes in your body.  We don’t add anything else or process the juice any other way after juicing it.  We simply juice, bottle and deliver to your doorstep the very night day.

Pasteurization is a process in which you heat the juice to a very high temperature to kill off any potential bacteria.  While doing so, you also kill any enzymes that your body uses as well as essential vitamins and nutrients. UV light, and high pressure pasteurization don’t use heat but still kill off some vitamins and minerals in the juice.

Our 20+ juices are certified organic by Ecocert Canada.  Your health is very important to us, therefore we only use the best organic ingredients for our juices.

Reducing our environmental impact is at the forefront in many decisions we make at Green Press.  All of our bottles are glass bottles that we can reuse.  Glass Bottles, therefore NO WASTE.  We use compostable packaging for our food items in-store in order to reduce our waste.  This means higher packaging costs for us as a business, but we believe it’s worth it.

We reward our customers for bringing back their glass bottles so that we can help keep the environment clean and green.  Customers also collect 1% off all their in store purchases back onto their account to be used for future purchases.  Check out our bottle recycling program and how many points you get back per bottle depending on size.

Hello Friends! A Message from our Founders

Hello Friends!

Wow, seems like it’s taken us forever to finally get a blog! We know we’re late to the game, but now that we are here you’ll be hearing a lot more from us. Get ready because our blogs are going to be AWE-Some! We’ve had 5 years to prep! If you trying to live a healthier and well-balanced lifestyle and don’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place.  We plan to talk about health, wellness, juicing, success stories, fitness, healthy recipes, and more! You can subscribe to our newsletter to receive updates about new blog posts.

Since this is our first blog post we wanted to start by introducing ourselves, our products, and our goal. We would also like to welcome you if you’re new and have never met us before.  We really do value and appreciate all of our customers, whom have become our friends. Thank you for all your support and amazing reviews. Let’s begin!!

Who we are:

Green Press is a family owned and operated organic cold pressed juice & food bar. We founded the company in June 2014 and opened our first juice bar location in October 2014.  Founded by Samar Harb, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and Suhail Taji, a Finance Professional who have a shared passion for health and wellness. We quickly grew and opened up our second store in Toronto at the Yonge-Bloor subway station PATH.  Our juices grew in popularity and made it possible for us to open our third location in Port Credit Mississauga.

(Our Grand Opening in October 2014 in Downtown Oakville)

Our Products (Organic Cold Pressed Juices, Healthy Food and Online Groceries):

All of our juices are designed by our team of Registered Holistic Nutritionists.  Our juices are certified organic by Ecocert Canada.  We do not pasteurize our products, nor do we add any nasty chemicals, additives or preservatives to extend shelf life.  We know, many of our competitors have gone the route of High Pressure Pasteurization (HPP) or UV light to extend shelf life, but we decided to stay true to our core belief and our original product.  We simply make the juice, immediately bottle it in glass bottles, and deliver it to your doorstep the very next morning.  Our customers receive the same high-quality ingredients that we demand for our own family and children.

We have grown to meet the needs of our customers and added nutritious meals to our menu to allow our customers to enjoy delicious meals without compromising on health or quality. Our in-store menu has a variety of different healthy food options like power bowls, wraps, toasts, smoothies, acai bowls and salads.

Since the pandemic started in March 2020 this year we have had to pivot and change some of the ways our company operates.  I’m sure everyone can relate!  We started to offer our customers fresh organic grocery delivery.  We had an astonishing number of people who were interested so we kept it on our site and part of our business model to offer fresh organic groceries and pantry items to our customers.  It makes it possible for us to be your one stop shop! It also allows you to reach the minimum for free delivery quite easily by adding a few juices and some essentials from our grocery section.

Our Goal

We want to help people live healthier lives through effective means of nourishment. We also deeply care about the environment so we recycle our glass bottles   We aim to provide high quality food and juices that also taste delicious and change people’s perspective on “healthy food” not being flavourful or delicious.  We want our customers to experience the same uplift in health, mental & physical wellbeing, and energy as we have experienced by living a healthy balanced life.  Our exceptional customer service, outstanding quality, and high-density nutrition are at the forefront of anything we do.

Our mission is to help our communities live healthier lifestyles through the provision of clean, nutritious eats, and an active lifestyle.

Thank you for following along our journey and we hope you will find our blog fun and informative!

With love,

Samar & Suhail
